Goal
- Very short drifted turns with active edge pressure
- Rhythmic linking of turns
- Higher speed
- Active control of tempo and turn radius
- Speed control
Where
Steeper slope (red run); well-prepared, grippy piste
How
The turn is initiated by a very quick and dynamic up-unweighting, immediately following a strong edge push. The rotation is triggered by an impulse from the front knee, with clear upper-body rotation being essential. The board switches edges. Pressure on the new edge is increased by stopping the downward movement, and maximized at the end of the steering phase through another rapid upward movement.
Throughout the run, the neutral riding stance is maintained to better steer the turn and control riding in steep terrain. Smooth execution, dynamic movements, and rhythmic linking of turns are key foundations for the short turn.
Methodical progression
- Repetition of the drift turn with up-unweighting
- Funnel turns: start with large radii and gradually make them smaller (subconscious progression)
- Demonstration of the finished movement and adapted technical explanation
- Exercises for edge push
- Follow the instructor’s track
- Provide rhythm acoustically
