CARVING WITH UP-UNWEIGHTING

Goal

  • Initiating a carved turn through up-unweighting
  • Targeted use of loading and unloading during a turn
  • Sporty carving in more demanding terrain

Where

Moderately steep slope (blue to red run); well-prepared, grippy piste

How
In addition to the radius shortening used in the carving tilt turn, the turn is initiated by an active push off the edge. This further unweights the board, allowing for an even quicker edge change. On the new edge, the snowboard is immediately set strongly on edge and the turn is steered along the sidecut. By maintaining upper body tension and performing a gradual downward movement, the energy of the edge change is absorbed and balance is maintained.

From the fall line onward, the rider steers the turn through body angulation. The downward movement continues until the board exits the fall line. At the end of the turn, a dynamic extension of the legs builds maximum pressure. The turn is then completed, and the next unweighting is prepared.

Throughout the entire carving run, the neutral riding stance is maintained. The board is guided on edge for the full duration of each turn.

Methodical progression

  1. Demonstration of the finished movement and adapted technical explanation
  2. Stationary exercise with three people: the learner stands in the middle with the board strapped in. Partners stand in front and behind, supporting toeside and heelside edging
  3. Pay attention to body angulation
  4. Turn toward the slope: pick up sufficient speed
  5. One-and-a-half turns
  6. Linking turns together
  7. Variation of speed, turn radius, and terrain
