Objective
Dynamic change of direction initiated by steering pressure; situation-appropriate stance; sporty, anticipatory, and adapted skiing in medium-long and long radius turns.
Terrain: Moderately steep terrain
Movement Description
Both skis glide on the uphill edges. Steering pressure is created through increasing edging, weighting, and controlled turning of the skis. A dynamic forward/upward motion with edge change, pole plant, and shifting of the center of mass toward the inside of the turn initiates the new change of direction. During the remainder of the turn, a situation-appropriate Alpine Basic Position is established. In the steering phase, the outside ski takes the leading role, while the inside ski is weighted as needed.
Methodical Progression
- Repeat parallel turns basic – long radius, increase speed
- Start in parallel stance – elevated middle position – fan progression up to the fall line (improve edge grip)
- One-and-a-half turn
- Link dynamic parallel turns, finish steering for speed control
- Vary terrain, turn radius, and speed
