SNOWPLOW STEERING

Objective

Changing direction by steering on the uphill (mountain-side) edges.

Terrain: Flat to moderately steep terrain

Movement Description:
Start in the Alpine Basic Position (traverse), initiate a forward/upward movement and at the same time wedge the uphill ski outward; enter in the direction of the fall line; after the weight shift, edge and match the inside ski, reestablish the Alpine Basic Position, and steer through the remainder of the turn. Matching the inside ski depends on the situation and is influenced by terrain, speed, and turn radius.

Methodical Progression

  1. Starting in a snowplough position, use the fan progression up to the fall line
  2. Stationary exercise: Alpine Basic Position – forward/upward movement and simultaneous uphill wedging out – move down and match the inside ski (edge change)
  3. Single turn: Traverse, wedge out the uphill ski, enter the fall line, pressure the outside ski, match and steer
  4. One and a half turn
  5. Linking turns
  6. Variations in terrain, track, turn radius, rhythm, and speed
