Objective
Skiing on the uphill (mountain-side) edges, Alpine Basic Position
Terrain: Moderately steep
Movement Description:
• Middle Position: Ready to move in all directions.
The skis are kept hip-width apart, ankle, knee, and hip joints are slightly flexed, standing firmly on the whole sole.
• The downhill ski bears more weight
• Knees and hips are inclined inward toward the mountain
• The upper body bends forward and sideways to adjust to the slope
• Axis parallelism: The imaginary axes through the ankle, knee, and shoulder joints are approximately parallel to each other.
• Arms are slightly bent, raised, and held in front of the body to the sides
Methodical Progression
- Demonstrate and explain the Alpine Basic Position
- Stationary exercise (side-stepping; lifting the inside ski)
- Traversing in the Alpine Basic Position
- Traversing in the “swallow” position
- Traversing with hip support (Superman)
- Traversing while lifting the uphill ski tail
- Traversing and stepping up into a higher track
The Alpine Basic Position is the central fundamental stance in skiing and is essential for successful learning progress. It describes a stable yet always ready-to-move body position, allowing skiers to respond flexibly to external factors.
